Details

This exquisitely beautiful early Gothic style church was the final project by highly renowned Baltimore architect, E. Francis Baldwin. Its design was inspired by Saint Giles Church at Stokes-Poges located in Buckinghamshire England, where poet Thomas Gray wrote his "Elegy in a Country Church Yard." Unfortunately, Baldwin died before this church was completed so his funeral was held in the old church in the shadow of this, his final masterpiece.

Our church features richly colored stained glass windows created by New York Artisans, John Morgan & Sons. Our choir loft includes a 27 Rank Wick Pipe Organ installed in the 1990's, a gift by Mrs. Dorothy Bunting, a long-time benefactor of our parish. We are located a 5 minute walk from the Mount Washington Light Rail Station, and in close proximity to the Baltimore Clayworks (originally Enoch Pratt Library Branch 21) and the Johns Hopkins Mount Washington Octagon (formerly MW Female School & Mount Saint Agnes College).

At the present time, the SSH Church is slated for closure by the Archdiocese of Baltimore, so this Doors Open Tour may be a rare opportunity to view this historic architectural treasure.

Meeting place: 5800 Smith Ave - Main Entrance Hall at the rear of the church (facing Smith Avenue)
