88.1 WYPR is proud to present the New/Next Film Festival, a weekend-long celebration of film culture taking place Aug. 18-20 at The Charles Theatre in Baltimore.

New/Next will present emerging film work of international scope alongside a special emphasis on new and repertory work from the Baltimore and Maryland film scenes, curated by former Maryland Film Festival Director of Programming Eric Allen Hatch.

The festival was conceived as a reaction to the announcement that the Maryland Film Festival would not have a 2023 edition. New/Next will offer Baltimore the first opportunity in many years to experience a world-class film festival with all of its screens under one roof.

There will be an opening night feature film, followed by a celebration in the lot across from The Charles and a concert at the Metro Gallery with co-headliners TT the Artist and Dapper Dan Midas.

All-Access Passes include access to:
- All New/Next screenings (with an advance window for film and seat selection ahead of public ticketing)
- Opening Night Party and concert featuring TT the Artist and Dapper Dan Midas
- Saturday Night Concert (band schedule TBA)
- Closing Night Party

The full festival lineup will be announced in late July, but films announced as of June 28 include:

- Sebastián Silva’s uproarious, Sundance-premiered dark comedy Rotting in the Sun, starring Silva and breakout personality Jordan Firstman
- Acclaimed filmmaker (and recent Baltimore transplant) Sam Pollard’s Max Roach: The Drum Also Waltzes (SXSW 2023), a riveting look at the life, career, and activism of the iconic musician
- Baltimorean Meredith Moore’s warm and joyous short documentary Margie Soudek's Salt and Pepper Shakers (Sundance 2023), scored by Dan Deacon.

New/Next’s lineup announcements will continue through July. All emerging films screened will be Baltimore premieres. The festival will also present several repertory films, including one feature (to be named in a subsequent announcement) selected and introduced by Baltimore-based musical duo Beach House (Victoria Legrand and Alex Scally).
